Louisa Burnett-Hall
Born 1965, Louisa Burnett-Hall spent her childhood in the chalk valleys of Hampshire, moving to Scotland to study Fine Art at Edinburgh. There she painted her first landscapes inspired by the rich colours and rolling hills of the lowlands. In 1990 she left the UK to paint in Paris. Her series of fish paintings began in the late 1990's, where she explores light, movement and the relationship of beings in and with their surrounding space. Her work is in private collections throughout the world.
Inspired by the abstract qualities in the natural world, I have become increasingly fascinated by the lines of movement in water. This began in the late 1990's with the discovery of the webs of light and colour caused by my camera flash, on the surface of a rippling pool filled with Koi carp. I have since worked on the interaction of fish in water, their relationship with their environment and the visual effects of refraction and fragmentation. One series of paintings is about weightlessness and the sensation of space and flight. Both the fish and waterlines are of course allegories for Life.

I am currently looking at the calligraphic surface of running water from places I've visited – whether a Normandy brook or the River Eure that flows through Chartres. I 'zoom' into the abstract details, swathes of light and dark building up another image, another world, creating 'Riverscapes'.
